About the Department
The Department was established in the year 1945; with B.A. Degree course (Philosophy, Logic, and Indian Culture) till 1972. From 1972 to 1978 as Psychology and Indian Culture for B.A. Degree course.
Since 1979 onwards the department existed as Psychology Department. The former Heads of the department were Late. Dr. K.C.Varadachari, Late Major Raghavendra Rao, Late Dr. N.V.Subbanchare as Professor & Head of the department. Late Sri R. Chandrasekhar as a Head of the department till 1996.
Later Dr. T. Siddhamma, Lecturer in Psychology, ,S.P.W. College was deputed as incharge of the department till 2002 and then Sri L.R. Mohan Kumar Reddy and Sri. T. Kuppireddy, Lecturers in Hilstory were kept in-charge of the department up to 2004. Dr. S.Azmal Basha, i.e. self has taken charge as Head of the department from 04\06\ 2004 to till date.
At present one regular and one Contract Lecturer, are involved as teaching faculty & one Asst/Shroff as Lab Assistant in the Department of Psychology.
Vision
- To develop skill full and qualified psychologists by providing theoretical and experimental learning in all areas of psychology to disseminate the knowledge to the community for a healthy society
Mission
- To help students master and keep abreast the knowledge in all fields of Psychology.
- To equip the students with different techniques to apply in the field essentially and develop their career accordingly.
- To support research and areas of research necessary for the advancement of knowledge in all disciplines.
- To analyse their strength and promote self esteem, confidence and well being through education and support services.
Curricular Aspects
Psychology as optional subject in B.A. with History, Economics in Telugu medium. The sanctioned intake of the Department is 20 students. It is one of the oldest department offering Psychology from S.V. University affiliated college.
The syllabus is prescribed by S.V. University under common core system. During the academic year 2015-16, Choise Based Credit System was introduced for all the affiliated degree colleges under Sri Venkateswara University. The following table describes the Psychology papers titles, hours and mark:

Teaching Learning Evaluation
The method adopted by the faculty is lecturer method for teaching. Eliciting examples in day to day events (Individual, group) group discussions, conduct of seminars, debats, quizzes, assignments, roll play models, creative learning are taking place in the classes. In addition, to make teaching more effective charts, models ,OHP sheets, PPTs, video lessons were also bring used.
Practical class which is of 2 hours duration is divided into two parts, one hour is slated for the experimental demonstration and one hour is allotted for individual performance of experiments and to note down the observations.
The academic standard of the students are assessed by periodical conduct of oral, slip tests and internal examinations.
Based on the practical class results and discussion individual and comparison with group easily can identify one as slow learner or fast learner. Remedial courses are offered for academically backward students by counselling of the difficult topic by way of student’s wards, thus students were motivated to learn the material effectively.
During the practical class, experimental charts, kits, PPTs and video virtual demonstrations are also used for better understanding.
Apart from having huge library, the department exclusively has a departmental library with about 50 books and about 200 books in the digital library. The books for this library have been contributed by various donors.
The teachers on their part update their knowledge by referring journals, reference books, participating in seminars, refresher courses and using internet facility.

Infrastructure
- Lab one for first year students named Wilhelm Wundt’s laboratory who is father of experimental psychology and J.B. Watsons laboratory who introduced the school of behaviourism named for second and third year students as Lab.-2.
- The department is equipped with various instruments for the practical classes to the students, to assess Psychological aspects like personality, intelligence, to know attention, memory, thinking, perceptions, emotions, imagination, learning abilities, aptitudes and attitudes etc. To conduct experiments in individual and as well as group settings.
- In addition to these two labs, one well furnished room for staff and Head of the Department is also available.
Students Support and Progression
- The students are advised to utilize the reading room and sectional library in their spare time as frequently as possible.
- Periodical counselling of the students is carried out so that they can clear of their doubts.
- The students are exposed by involving them in seminars and quiz within the class.
- Students are guided to prepare some mini projects, case study observations etc.
- The department assists guidance for the students who appear for PGCET in various universities and other competitive examinations.
Organisation and Management
- The department functions under the supervision of the Principal, through the head of the department.
- The head of the department looks after day to day functions of the department.
- Periodical meetings are held among the staff to discuss departmental activity and democratic decisions are taken and implemented.
- Internal In-charges are allotted among the staff for effective functioning.
- In addition to teaching work, the faculty also looks after the admissions, examinations, NCC, Hostel and other related works.
Research Activities and Books Publications
- The department is equipped with research centre. The members of the staff attached to S.V.University, Tirupati, Department of Psychology for research work utilise it.
- The Thrust area of researchers are organizational behaviour, sociological aspects, educational aspects, gerontology aspects, Inter disciplinary research.
- Till now two Ph.D degrees are awarded from the department.
- Papers were published in national and international journals by the faculty of the department.
- The faculty are attended for National and International seminars to present their research activities.
- The faculty are the authors of few books published for the benefit of students.
Healthy Practice and Staff Involvement
- The students are advised to inculcate good moral values.
- The students are advised to prepare models, charts and mini projects etc., of subject interest.
- The students are taken to the local Regional Science centre, special schools, Hospitals and NGO’s , knowledge of some psychological aspects.
- Feedback from outgoing students is encouraged and their suggestions are positively considered for implementation.
- The personal problems of the students are entertained and solved as far as possible.
- Maintaining the visitors suggestions book in the department.
- Faculty members actively participated in various college committees viz Time table, Examinations, Admissions, Hostel and also TTD Management assigned activities etc.,.
Future Plans of The Department
- It is proposed to apply minor and major research projects from funding agencies like UGC,ICSSR,ICMR,DST and state government organizations to continue research work.
- New courses as professionally oriented to introduced.
- Diploma in Counselling and Guidance.
- Psychology with B.S.c combination to be introduced.
