About the Department

The Department of Biotechnology was established in the year 2009 in S.V. Arts College, Tirupati with the combination of Biotechnology, Botany and Computer Science named as B. Sc. (BBCs). The course was recognised by the S.V. University, Tirupati and started with 30 students. Sri. Jayarama Prasad, (Rtd.)(2009-2010) Lecturer in Zoology was the first Head of the Department of Biotechnology (I/C) and charge handed over to Dr. M. Vani M.Sc, Ph.D (2010-2012) and Dr.P. Nagaraju, Lecturer in Botany (2012-2014) was handed over the charge from Dr. M. Vani. Since 2014 the department is being headed by Dr. P. Munilakshmi, Lecturer in Zoology.

Due to non-beneficial occurrences of BBCs course by S.V. University, the combination of BBCs had been converted into BBC (Biotechnology, Botany, Chemistry) in the academic year 2012-2013 with 30 students. It is one of the platform to join in Medical Biotechnology and Medical Microbiology and related courses in AIMS, SVIMS, VIMS like National Institutions and B.Ed. courses. It is running successfully till to date.

  • To adequately equip the students to apply themselves meaningfully in any activity requiring botanical expertise.

Infrastructure

The Department is located in the first floor consisting Tissue Culture Lab and Biochemistry lab. The laboratories are equipped with the following equipments.

  • INOCULATION CABIN
  • TISSUE CULTURE CABIN
  • INSTRUMENTAL CABIN
  • EQUIPMENTS :Laminar Air Flow Chamber, Seed Germinator Tissue Culture Rack, Incubator Autoclave, Hot Air Oven, Ph Meters, Colony Counter, Colorimeter, PCR Equipment Simple Microscopes.
  • LAB USES IN THE DEPARTMENT :Experimental work in rDNA technology and molecular biology Tissue culture preparations
  • COMPUTER FACILITY :The department is provided computer with Wi-Fi facility
  • DEPARTMENTAL LIBRARY : The department itself is maintain own library apart from college library. Around 30 books with major authors.
Departmental Library
  • The Departmental library has more over 200 volumes of books for UG students, apart from the college library with numerous zoology related books and 50 volumes for Competitive Examinations.
