About the Department

The Department had its origin in the year 1957 under the affiliation of S. V. University, Tirupati and managed by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) with the benevolence and blessings of Lord Sri Venkateswara. Initially it was started as Department of Biology along with Zoology subject. At that time Botany was taught to the students of old two year Intermediate and Pre-professional Courses like Medicine, Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences & P.U.C. The B. Sc. Course was started in the year 1962 with C.B.Z. combination and P.U.C. Course continued till 1969. The Department was first Headed by late Prof. P. Perraju Garu and at present Dr. C. Ramesh Garu is the Head of the Department. Recently, the skill oriented courses are implemented within the course as a part of National Educational Policy (NEP-2020). The Botany Department is committed to empower the students with proficiency in relevant knowledge and capacity building by periodically updating the curriculum and modifying the courses to achieve contemporary relevance that widen the scope for self-development and create career opportunities across globally.

The Department takes a conscious effort to expand its teaching program bringing together novel developments in the field of Botany through field Excursions and Projects. The students are coached and encouraged through remedial teaching and academic guidance. The results of the department remain excellent and our students secure positions in the University. The good positions are achieved by our Department students in various Universities in higher studies. The Department has also achieved success by guiding and providing facilities for students to qualify in competitive examinations.

Infrastructure
The department is located in the first floor at western side of the College main building.
  • Class rooms and Labs: The Institution has provided the good infrastructure facilities to the department. It comprises of spacious class rooms and well equipped Practical Labs such as M.O.P. Iyengar’s Lab, Mendel’s Lab and Physiology Lab for effective teaching. There is a separate chamber for Head of the Department and two staff rooms for the teaching faculty.
  • Museum: The department has a Museum named as Historia Plantarum which contains 200 number of various types of specimens, 5 fossils, few dry fruits and some important seed collections.
  • Herbarium: A separate Herbarium Chamber is there for the department which contains 300 number of herbarium sheets. It has developed as a local flora of S. V. University, Tirupati.
  • The Library Besides having the Central Library, the Department has its own library with 120 books on its stakes.
  • Future plan:
    • To increase the stock of Herbarium Sheets and Seed Bank.
    • To submit research proposal to UGC, DBT and SERB etc.,
    • To organize Seminars, Workshops and Conferences.
    • To start Diploma/Certificate Courses in herbal techniques or preservation of fruits and vegetables.
    • Mushroom Technology.
    • Tissue Culture and Nursery Development.
    • To install the Vermicompost Unit in the college campus.
