About the Department

In the recent years, dairying in India is making fast progress. India has acquired number one position in the world. Further rapid development need well trained and skilled personnel in this field.

Keeping in view, this department was established in the year 1991 with the combination of Chemistry, Dairy Science and Zoology as group subjects under part-II, in B.Sc., in English medium only.

There are only two Colleges in the entire S.V University area, one being ours, the Pride of our management and has shot to frame in a short period of time offering Dairy Science, as most of the villages in Rayalaseema area have lots of cattle and thrive on milk trade. This encouraged some of the managements, to establish Dairy Industries. Hence this technical course provides training and skills in milk productivity. Thus, the course helps to find employment opportunities.

Keeping in view the influence of micro-organisms on preservation of milk, milk products and chemical aspects etc., our college alone in the entire State, has introduced Microbiology, Dairy Science and Chemistry as a special group in B.Sc., from the academic year 2005-06.

Therefore, candidates pursuing a course in dairy technology have a lot of scope and career opportunities in this field.

A graduate in Dairy Technology can find jobs in both public and private sectors at places such as Rural Banks, Manufacturing Firms, Milk Product Processing and Dairy Farms, etc. Given below are the job profiles available for Dairy Technology graduates and postgraduates

  • Dairy Technologist: A dairy technologist is responsible for developing new and more effective methods of production, preservation, and utilization of dairy products using the principles of Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Engineering, And Bacteriology.
  • Microbiologist: A Microbiologist monitors and studies microbes such as bacteria, fungi and viruses by using a variety of analytical and scientific techniques. A microbiologist usually studies organisms that cause disease and environmental damage or are of agricultural or industrial interest.
  • Dairy Nutritionist: A Dairy Nutritionist is directly involved with the dietary management of dairy cattle herds. The main aim of a dairy nutritionist is to ensure maximum production while maintaining overall herd health.
  • Dairy Scientist: A Dairy Scientist is an Agricultural Scientist who helps increasing milk production and streamlining milk processing. The scientist also helps in improving animal welfare and productivity through more efficient means of producing as well as using milk.
  • Quality Control Officer: A Quality Control Officer’s responsibility is to ensure that dairy products meet the required quality and efficiency standards.

Infrastructure
There are three spacious laboratories, each with 30’ x 40’ in the Department.
  1. Dairy Technology Lab
  2. Dairy Chemistry Lab
  3. Dairy Microbiology Lab
  • All the three laboratories are fully equipped with permanent articles to cater to the needs of the students for performing Practical work.
  • Students are allowed, to do the Practical on their own, after demonstration, so as to gain experience.
  • The college library and the internet available in the department are utilized to have latest and up-date information in the subject concerned.
  • All the members of the faculty have good knowledge in computer operations.
  • Final Year Student who have taken Dairy Science as their cluster are sent for implant training for a period of 15 days to various Dairy plants located of Chittoor and Nellore Districts.
  • 4 students were sent to Shreeja Dairy, Tirupati who were offered jobs in the Dairy after completing their courses.
  • 5 students were sent to Balaji Dairy plant, Tirupati
  • 8 student were sent to implant training at Dairy technology collage, Tirupati
  • All the students got exposure in different sections of the respective dairy plants as partial fulfillment of their degree program.
  • All the final year students were taken to Balaji Dairy for study tour of the dairy plant.
  • All second year Dairy Science students were sent for in-form training at S.V. Gosamrakshanasala, TTDs, Tirupati.
  • All Final year students are going for practical purpose Dairy Microbiology, Dairy Chemistry, Dairy Technology.
